MEd in Curriculum and Instruction - Emphasis in elementary or secondary education

The M.Ed. includes a core of three semester hours in research, three semester hours in foundations, and three semester hours in curriculum and instruction.

The M.Ed. is completed one of three capstone options, a culminating experience (electronic professional portfolio), a professional paper (practical application), or a thesis (research).

Any graduate student who selects the Professional Paper/Project option for the M.Ed. must seek an academic advisor (C&I faculty member) who agrees to guide the student through the two-semester process (CIG 717 for 1 semester hour followed by CIG 718 for 3 semester hours).

Guidelines And Emphases For Master Of Science (M.S.)

The M.S. degree requires a minimum of 39 semester hours of coursework with some emphasis areas requiring 42 semester hours of coursework. Any graduate student who selects the M.S. option must seek an academic advisor (C&I faculty member) who agrees to guide the student through the two-semester thesis process.

Graduate students who select the Master of Science (M.S.) degree must complete six (6) hours of research courses as listed in the core requirements for each area of emphasis before registering for any thesis hours. In addition, a thesis prospectus must be filed with the C&I Department and the Graduate College the semester prior to registering for thesis hours. The form, “Prospectus Approval Form,” must be completed by the student, signed by the student's advisor, and returned to the C&I Department Graduate Studies Office (CEB 368A) three (3) weeks prior to the last day of instruction the semester before enrolling in CIG 719 Thesis. The C&I Graduate Studies Office will obtain signatures from committee members and forward the form to the Graduate College. General thesis requirements

The minimum number of thesis credits is six.

  1. Designed to demonstrate the student’s ability to conduct research through the selection of a specific problem or topic, the gathering of pertinent and necessary data, the organization of ideas, and the writing of a document in professional, academic language.
  2. Written in American Psychological Association (APA) style. Students should obtain copies of A Thesis and Dissertation Manual from the Graduate College and Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (4th edition) from the UNLV bookstore.
  3. Follow established thesis deadlines as published in the UNLV Graduate Catalog.

PhD in Curriculum and Instruction - Emphasis in Science Education

This course of study is for professional educators who desire to extend and advance knowledge in the theory and practice of education as university researchers. The completion of this degree will particularly enable individuals to become skilled researchers as members of university faculties.

EdD in Curriculum and Instruction - Emphasis in Science Education

This program is intended for professional educators who desire to extend and advance their studies in the theory and practice of education. The completion of this degree will enable individuals to become members of university faculties but particularly suited for positions as leaders in school districts and community agencies.
